As a Data Engineer II, you’ll be at the core of an ambitious mission: to accelerate financial innovation through a streamlined, scalable banking platform that allows product teams to bring digital banking solutions to market faster and smarter.
🔧 Key Responsibilities
As part of Amex’s agile development teams, you will:
- Design, build, and test scalable software solutions to support banking and financial products.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define data architecture and translate business needs into technical specifications.
- Develop robust data ingestion pipelines and services using Python, FastAPI, Kafka, and PySpark.
- Refactor and optimize existing codebases with a focus on scalability, performance, and maintainability.
- Build test cases using Test-Driven Development (TDD) and ensure data integrity across platforms.
- Contribute to product innovation through continuous learning, experimentation, and problem-solving.
- Document data stories, maintain models, and support metadata management for seamless integration.
- Lead multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision while adapting to fast-changing priorities.
🧠 What You Bring to the Table
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess a combination of technical depth, business understanding, and effective communication.
✅ Required Skills & Technologies:
- Python OOP and core libraries (e.g., JSON, os, logging, Base64)
- Python packaging tools: Poetry
- Microservices using FastAPI (Asynchronous/Reactive)
- Distributed Storage & Compute systems
- PySpark: DataFrames, SQL, Aggregation, Window Functions
- Kafka, Hyperdrive, Cornerstone, CStreams, Event Engine
- REST API design and documentation using Swagger
- Docker containers and cloud deployment (Hydra)
- Logging using Amex’s internal logging framework
- Development tools like Jenkins, XLR, and more
💼 Domain Expertise:
- Knowledge of banking protocols such as Money Movement, Zelle, ACH, Intraday transactions
- Familiarity with Data Governance tools: Collibra, Manta
🗣 Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
- Clear communication for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field
